Background and Objective: One month abstinence-based residential treatment is one of the common drug dependance treatments in Iran but there is a paucity of research on the reasons associated with entring this treatment. To contribute to this understanding, the present preliminary study aimed to explore these reasons.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 81 heroin addicts. Who had entered the residential center in the east of Tehran. After completing demographics infromation, details of drug use and risky behaviors based on the Addiction Severity Index, an interview was conducted to explore their reasons for entring the treatment. Descriptive methods of statistics including frequency, percent, mean and standard deviation were performed.
Results: The study findings indicated the roles of 1) previous positive treatment experience with residential treatment 58 respondents (71.6%), 2) others' success in residential treatment: 33 respondents (40.7%), 3) spiritual-based group therapy: 27 respondents (33.3%), 4) treatment without using chemical medications: 21 respondents (25.9%), 5) drug-free residential setting: 20 respondents (24.7%) 6) lack of success in other drug treatments: 16 respondents (19.7%), 7) cheap treatment: 11 respondents (13.6%) and 8) desire for experiencing this treatment: 4 respondents (4.9%).
Conclusion: The study results showed the strong influence of internal and external motivational factors in selecting the residential treatment.
