Background and Objective:
The quality of nursing cares and nurses’ performance
in patient care dimension is affected by the professional values. Studies have shown that a
person's personality has an important role in professional values. This
research aimed to investigate any probable relationship between personality
characteristics and professional values among nurses.
Materials
and Methods: This descriptive study was
conducted on 200 nurses working in educational hospitals of Ahwaz University of
Medical Sciences in 2014. Nurses were randomly selected and fulfilled demog raphical
checklist, NEO Personality
Inventory and Nursing Professional Values Scale- Revised (NPVS-R). Data was
analyzed using t-test, one -way
ANOVA and Pearson's correlation test.
Results:
Findings showed a significant
relationship between the sex and some personality characteristics (p<0.05), whereas any significant relationship was
observed between demographical charactristics and professional values (p>0.05).
There was a significant and inverse relationship between neuriticism and some professional values. In addition, a significant and
positive relationship was observed between extroversion, agreeableness and
conscientiousness and some professional values (p<0.05).
However, it was seen any significant relationship
between openness and professional values (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study showed
that there is a significant relationship between some personality
characteristics and some professional values of nurses. So, these
characteristics should be considered in employing nurses.
