Nonfatal Suicidal Behavior and Related Features in Students within Muslim Majority Countries: A Report from an Ongoing International Proposal in Iran

Suicide is one of the important public health problems especially within youth population of the world. Previous studies have shown that deliberate self harm has higher frequency among youth population within Muslim countries. Whilst Islam condemns suicide it is not clear that why youth Muslims commit more deliberate self harm compared with youths from other religions. Therefore, an international research proposal has been developed with the aim of determining nonfatal suicidal behavior and related features in students within Muslim majority countries. This proposal contains a descriptive study among twelve Muslim majority countries including Turkey, Islamic Republic of Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Palestine, Azerbaijan, Jordon, Pakistan, Malaysia, Tunisia and Indonesia. This research proposal was firstly written by Mehmet Skin and then was read, altered and approved by eleven other collaborators in autumn 2015. At the beginning of 2016 the questionnaire was translated and up to spring 2017 the data were gathered and entered into software. It is planned that by the end of summer 2017 the data will be analyzed and the relevant articles will be written. In each country 700 students including 350 females and 350 males will complete a valid and reliable questionnaire. The chief aim of the present article is to report a comprehensive overview of this ongoing international research proposal especially in Iran.
