Abstract

Background and Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent functional disorders of the digestive system with unknown causes. Reasearches have indicated that there is a relationship between IBS and mood disorders. The aim of this study was evaluation of the relative frequency of major depression disorder and bipolar spectrum in patients with irritable bowel syndrome in comparison with control group.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive, cross- sectional study was performed on 137 patients who were referred to a digestive clinic in Isfahan Nour hospital and had digestive complains in accordance with known cases of IBS based on ROM III criteria. Also, a control group (without digestive problems) was selected that consisted of 137 individuals. The two groups filled out Beck and MDQ questionnaires for the purpose of diagnosis depression and bipolar disorders respectively.
Results: Relative frequency of major depression disorder in IBS patients was 78 persons (57%) which, compared with 44 persons (32%) in the control group indicated a considerable significant difference (p<0.001). Also, the relative frequency of bipolar disorders in the affected group was 30 persons (21.9%) versus 10 persons in the control group (7.3%) which, regarding p=0.001, indicates a considerable difference.
Conclusion: Regarding the results obtained, there is a considerable relationship between irritable bowel syndrome and mood disorders. The results indicate that cooperation between gastroenterologists and psychiatrists is an essential need for managing the irritable bowel syndrome.

Background and Objectives: Rumination in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the cognitive risk factors for suffering from mood disorders. On the other hand repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a non-invasive method is applied for treatment of MDD. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of rTMS on reducing rumination in patients with MDD.
Materials and Methods: In the present randomized clinical trial study, from among the patients with MDD referring to Atieh Clinical Neuroscience Center in Tehran from December 2016 to September 2017, the number of 64 subjects were selected through convenience sampling method and randomly assigned into two groups of experiment and control. The experimental group during 10 sessions, received 10 rTMS on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex with a frequency of 10 Hz and on the same site of cortex at the right site at 1 Hz for two weeks. The control group also received sham rTMS. The patients were first screened using a structural clinical interview and then Ruminative Response Scale was performed before and after the treatment. The data also were analyzed using chi-square test, independent t-test and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Results: Bilateral rTMS caused a significant reduction in rumination (p=0.033) and brooding (p=0.005) compared to the control group. There was observed no significant change in pondering in the two groups (p>0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results, rTMS can be considered as a possible treatment for rumination reduction in patients with MDD.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: According to the high prevalence of anxiety and depression disorders in college students and the role of psychological inflexibility in a wide range of psychological issues, the present study was conducted aiming at comparing components of psychological inflexibility in students with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and normal students.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, 30 individuals with major depression disorder, 30 individuals with generalized anxiety disorder and 30 individuals with social anxiety disorder were selected through purposive sampling and 30 normal individuals by available sampling method among students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in the 2017-2018 academic year. The required information was collected through demographic characteristics questionnaire and the comprehensive assessment of acceptance and commitment therapy processes. MANOVA and Scheffe’s test were used to analyze data.
Results: The findings of this study showed that normal individuals got significantly lower scores in all components of psychosocial inflexibility (p<0.001). Among the three groups of patients, depressed individuals got significantly higher scores in the cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance component (F=240.37, p<0.001) and patients with generalized anxiety disorder got significantly higher scores in the self-conceptualized and past and future domination component (F=108.76, p<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, it seems that the components of psychological inflexibility can be considered as important factors in the psychopathology of individuals with depression and anxiety disorders.
