Knowledge and Practice Level of Self-Directed Care among Diabetics in Kermanshah City in 2014: A Short Report

Background and Objective: Diabetes is an important challenge to health. This study was performed in order to determine the knowledge and practice level of self-directed care among patients.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, demographic questionnaires, knowledge and practice questionnaire were completed by patients. Self-care status of patients was analyzed using t-test, χ2 and logistic regression.
Results: The mean age of the 726 patients was 52.10±13.92 years. Only 64.8% were women. In terms of knowledge, them and self-care, 27.7% of participants had low knowledge, 74.5% with low practice and 69.8% of them had low self-care. Between knowledge and practice and education existed significant relationship, so that with increase of education level, knowledge and practice increas more (p=0.01).
Conclusion: The results showed low levels of practice and self-care, hence, it is necessary to train more self-care programs and identify the obstacles that impede behavioral change and more self-care in patients.
