تولید مواد پلاستیکی در ده‌های اخیر به دلیل توسعه صنایع و افزایش محصولات بسته بندی، روندی افزایشی داشته که پس از دفع در محیط زیست، به ذرات ریزی به نام میکروپلاستیک‌ها تبدیل می‌شوند که می‌توانند باعث آلودگی محیط زیست و بخصوص منابع آبی شوند. در مطالعات مختلف، حضور و آزاد‌سازی میکروپلاستیک‌ها در محصولات غذایی نظیر نمک‌ها و شکر‌های خوراکی، مواد غذایی فرآوری شده و بسته بندی شده، ظروف و لیوان‌های یک‌بار مصرف پلاستیکی و کاغذی و بطری‌های آب معدنی گزارش شده است. میکروپلاستیک‌ها به دلیل اندازه بسیار کوچک (کمتر از mm 5) وارد زنجیره غذایی شده و می‌توانند وارد بدن موجودات زنده شوند و تجمع بیولوژیکی پیدا کنند. میکروپلاستیک‌های می‌توانند از طریق روده وارد گردش خون شوند و به تمامی‌اندام‌ها و بافت‌ها نفوذ کنند. مطالعات وجود ذرات میکروپلاستیک در بافت‌هایی مانند کبد، ماهیچه‌ها و مغز را نشان می‌دهد. موجودات زنده و انسان‌ها با مصرف مستقیم یا غیر مستقیم میکروپلاستیک‌ها از طریق آب، مواد غذایی و سیستم تنفسی، دچار آسیب‌های داخلی به ویژه در سیستم‌های گوارش و انسداد روده، اختلال در فعالیت‌های بافت‌ها و اندام‌ها، اختلال در سیستم اعصاب مرکزی و حتی بعضی از سرطان‌ها می‌شوند. بنابراین پیشنهاد می‌شود با مدیریت صحیح در تولید و مصرف پلاستیک‌ها و فرهنگ سازی استفاده کمتر از محصولات بسته بندی شده و یک‌بار مصرف، میزان مواجهه با میکروپلاستیک‌ها کاهش یابد.
