An Introduction to the GAMER Statement

We have already published several editorials in the Journal of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences concerning the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools in health research and scientific writing (1–5). In these editorials, we emphasized the necessity of using these novel tools in an informed, responsible, honest, and transparent manner. This editorial aims to familiarize the distinguished readers of the journal with the GAMER Statement, which has been developed in this area (6).
Luo and colleagues described the structure of this statement in an article published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine in 2025. First, GAMER is an acronym derived from the initial letters of Reporting guideline for the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in Medical Research. Second, this guideline was developed based on a Delphi study involving 56 experts from 26 countries worldwide (6). Distinguished readers of the journal may refer to articles previously published in this journal to become familiar with the methodology of Delphi studies (7, 8).
The GAMER Statement was developed to provide a global and standardized guideline for the use of generative artificial intelligence in medical research, ensuring transparency, integrity, and quality. Accordingly, the final checklist of this statement includes the following nine items, which authors should address before submitting their manuscripts (6):
  1. Have generative artificial intelligence tools been used in any stage of the study or in any section of the manuscript resulting from the study?
  2. If the answer to the above question is yes, the generative artificial intelligence tools used, their versions, release dates, and the time during which these tools were used should be specified precisely.
  3. If any specific prompting techniques were used to enable generative artificial intelligence to prepare sections of the manuscript or conduct the study analyses, these should be reported. In addition, the unedited responses generated by the AI tools to these prompts should be reported.
  4. If a new generative artificial intelligence tool has been developed based on existing tools, the name and version of the original model should be reported.
  5.  The role of the generative artificial intelligence tools used throughout all stages of the study, including manuscript preparation, should be described.
  6.  The specific sections or paragraphs of the manuscript in whose writing generative artificial intelligence tools played a role should be described.
  7. The method the content generated by generative artificial intelligence tools was verified and, where necessary, revised should be explained.
  8. The method by which data privacy and confidentiality were ensured while using generative artificial intelligence tools should be disclosed.
  9.  Whether and how the use of generative artificial intelligence tools may have affected the results, the overall accuracy of the study, or its conclusions should be explained.
The GAMER Statement is the first coherent statement that seeks to regulate the unrestrained use of generative artificial intelligence tools in health sciences research. Therefore, its use is recommended by all relevant journals. Furthermore, given the rapid changes in the development of generative artificial intelligence tools, regular updates of the GAMER Statement are also recommended
