Background and Objective: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the main causes of mortality in different human communities. Factor V Leiden, MTHFR C677T polymorphism and PLA2 polymorphism of platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa are important inheritance risk factors of VTE. As limited data of homozygous factors exists, the aim of the study was to investigate the association between homozygous polymorphisms and VTE in Shahrekord.

Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, EDTA venous blood was taken from 72 patients with venous thromboembolism referred to Shahrekord Hajar Hospital, and 306 age and sex matched healthy volunteers. Genotyping of factor V Leiden, MTHFR C677T and PLA2 polymorphisms was done by PCR-RFLP. Statistical analysis was done using descriptive statistics and χ2 test.

Results: There was a significant difference between patients and controls in the number of homozygous polymorphisms with the frequency of 16.77% and 4.90%, respectively (P=0.004). Homozygous FVL was more prevalent in patients than controls, but the difference was not significant. A significant difference was observed in the frequency of homozygous MTHFR C677T and PLA2 polymorphisms between the patients and controls (P=0.03 and P=0.001, respectively). The difference was not significant in the frequency of heterozygous polymorphisms except for PLA2.

Conclusion: The results of the study show the association between homozygous MTHFR and PLA2 thrombophilia polymorphisms and VTE in Shahrekord. Acquired risk factors may need to be controlled in homozygous carriers of these polymorphisms. Homozygous VTE carriers may need to be managed differently than other patients.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Streptococcus sanguinis and mutans are dental infections agents. Due to the adverse effects of chemical mouthwashes, the aim of the present study was to determine the antibacterial effects of cetylpyridinium chloride mouthwash and alcoholic extracts of Melissa officinalis plant on the growth of these bacteria.
Materials and Methods: In this laboratory study, M. officinalis leaves were collected and extracted using percolation method. Well diffusion method and determination of minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations were used for the antibacterial effects determination of alcoholic extracts of the plant and mouthwash in the concentrations of 250, 125, 62.5, 31.25, 15.62, 7.81, 3.9, 1.95, 0.97 and 0.48 mg/ml. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results: The most antibacterial effect of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of M. officinalis and mouthwash on S. mutans and sanguinis was in the concentration of 250 mg/ml and the least inhibitory concentrations against S. mutans were 3.9, 31.25 and 15.26 and against S. sanguinis were 31.25, 15.62and 31.25 mg/ml, respectively. The minimum bactericidal concentrations of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of M. officinalis and mouthwash against S. mutans were 125, 62.5 and 31.25 and against S. sanguinis were 62.5, 31.5 and 62.5 mg/ml, respectively. There was a positive significant correlation between increasing concentration of extracts and inhibition of bacterial growth (p <0.001).
Conclusion: It seems that M. officinalis extract like mouthwash can be used as an oral and teeth antiseptic. However, in-vivo tests and proves that there is no harmful effects on the human body are essential for the production of this type of herbal mouthwash.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an immediate action to delay or prevent death with cardiopulmonary arrest. Since nurses are usually the first to face this situation, the current study examines the nurses’ awareness of the latest CPR protocol at the Ali Ibn Abitalib Hospital in Rafsanjan.
Material and Methods: In this descriptive study conducted in the Ali Ibn Abitalib Hospital in Rafsanjan in 2019, 279 nurses were chosen by census method, and their level of awareness was assessed using a questionnaire based on the latest CPR instructions and the American Heart Association guidelines. Data analysis was accomplished by independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests.
Results: The average age of the participants in this study was about 34.59±7.01, out of which 182 (65.23%) were women. The average awareness score was estimated to be 71.84±5.57 (the highest score was 84.06 and the lowest score 52.17). Nine participants (3.22%), 255 participants (91.4%), and 15 participants (5.38%) had a weak, good, and excellent awareness, respectively. Meanwhile, the correlation between nurse’s awareness and CPR courses was not significant (p=0.544).
Conclusion: Most of the nurses had a good level of awareness of CPR, and practical training, exercises, and course evaluations in the field of CPR are recommended to increase the level of awareness of CPR.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Hemodialysis patients are exposed to psychological risks related to health. Cognitive behavioral therapy can play an effective role in improving psychological characteristics related to health. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on self-awareness, emotional regulation, and quality of life of hemodialysis patients in Kerman.
Materials and Methods: The present study is a quasi-experimental one with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design and a control group. The statistical population of this research was the patients of Shafa Hospital and Javad Al-Aima Clinic in Kerman in 2022. For this research 30 hemodialysis patients were selected using convenience sampling based on inclusion criteria, and randomly assigned into experimental and control groups of 15 subjects. The experimental group went under 8 sessions of 75 minutes twice a week, while the control group was held back on training. The evaluations of the participants were conducted using questionnaires of self-awareness, emotion regulation, and quality of life. The collected data were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA.
Results: The mean scores of coherent self-knowledge, emotion regulation, and quality of life before the intervention were 26.68, 37.93, 60.27 in the cognitive behavioral therapy group and 26.67, 37.95, 59.60 in the control group (p>0.05), respectively. After the intervention, a significant increase was observed in the mean score of the investigated psychological characteristics in the cognitive behavioral therapy group compared to the control group (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy intervention in the improvement of psychological characteristics in the experimental group. Therefore, this intervention can be used as a complementary treatment in hemodialysis patients.
