Background and Objectives: Suicide and attempted suicide are among the major public health problems and the most important indicators of public mental health, which vary according to economic, social, cultural, environmental, and individual factors. The present study was conducted in order to investigate the geographical epidemiology of suicide and attempted suicide in a 5-year period in the cities of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all the people who committed suicide (382 cases) and attempted suicide (7039 cases) in the citiies of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province, during 2017 to 2021, were investigated. Data were collected using the National Suicide Prevention Program Checklist and the age-standardized incidence rate was calculated for the cities.
Results: The most cases of suicide in these cities were among people of the age group 15 to 24 years old (30.80 to 76.50 percent), 25 to 34 years old (5.90 to 50 percent), single (46.20 to 100 percent), unemployed (23.54 to 52.90 percent), and housewives (11.90 to 38.5 percent), and also the most important cases of suicide attempt among people aged 15 to 24 years old (44.40 to 57.50 percent), 25 to 34 years old (25.70 to 32.60 percent), single (45.69 to 80.70 percent), unemployed (20.84 to 70.10 percent), and housewives (18.50 to 45.83 percent). Men had the highest frequency of suicide and women had the highest frequency of suicide attempts.
Conclusion: In all the cities of the province, most of the people who committed suicide or attempted suicide were between the ages of 15 and 34 and unemployed. Therefore, those in charge of health should necessarily pay special attention to the screening and referral of vulnerable groups, as well as the creation of employment opportunities, the family formation of young people, the education of puberty issues. And other problems of this age group.
