Background and Objective: Dyes have complicated structures, usually toxic and resistant to biological
treatment which entered to environment by industrial waste streams. The aim of
this study was the survey of isotherm and kinetic adsorption studies of
Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) dye onto Barberry stems powder from textile industrial wastewater.
Materials
and Methods: This study was done in laboratory scale and
used Barberry stems powder for removal of RB19 dye. In this study the effects
of initial dye concentrations (25 and 50 mg/L), pH (2, 4, 7, 9), adsorbent doses
(0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 gr/100 ml) and contact time (15, 30, 60, 120, 180 min and 24
hr) were investigated. The dye concentration was determined by using the UV/Vis
spectrophotometer at 592 nm. For better understanding of the adsorption
process, the experimental data were analyzed with Langmuir and Freundlich
isotherm models and kinetic studies.
Results: The results showed that removal of RB19 dye with Barberry stems powder as a
natural biosorbent increased by expanding of time and adsorbent dose. By
decreasing the initial dye concentration and pH, dye removal efficiency has
increased. In this study, the best fit of the adsorption isotherm data
was obtained using the Langmuir model. Kinetic analysis of our results showed
that the findings well fitted by pseudo-second-order reaction.
Conclusion: We can conclude that Barberry stems powder as a
biosorbent could be used for dye removal from aqueous solutions.
