Background and Objective: Todays, wastes are considered as one of the major pollutants of the environment. Increasing awareness and culture-building in relation to solid wastes management can be a solution to this important environmental issue. So, this study was done to determine the knowledge and performance of Rafsanjan residents toward municipal solid wastes management in 2017.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, 200 questionnaires were completed in different parts of Rafsanjan city. In this study, citizens responded to a questionnaire that was assessing their awareness and performance regarding municipal solid wastes management. For data analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent t-test, and Pearson correlation test were used.
Results: Citizens' awareness on waste related diseases and the influence of wastes on environment was not favorable. The level of their awareness on recycling the listed items in wastes such as paper, plastics, glass, and metal was in the rank of weak to moderate. Their awareness on reducing waste production and its disposal was weak and on compost was very weak. Performance of the citizens relating to the recycling organization and Municipality of the region was not in a favorable condition. Their performance regarding separation of wastes from the source and on time delivery of wastes was in poor and good conditions, respectively.
Conclusion: In general, awareness and performance of people in the field of municipal solid wastes management was not positive. It is suggested that holding educational courses, increasing public knowledge and building a culture in this regard can improve public awareness and performance conditions.
