Background and Objectives: Depression is one of the common problems. The use of compassion therapy and conducting research in this field has been increased in recent years. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of compassion-focused treatment on rumination and psychological well-being of patients with depression.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of the research included all the people suffering from depression in Gorgan City in 2023, 32 people were selected by convenience sampling and  randomly assigned into the experimental group (16 people) and control (16 people) groups. Then both groups were evaluated by Nolen and Hoeksema’s (1993) Rumination Questionnaire and Ryff’s (1989) Psychological Well-Being. The people in the experimental group received 8 sessions of group therapy focused on compassion during two months and as a 90-minute session per week, and the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results showed that after treatment, the mean rumination score (39.37±11.24) in the experimental group decreased (p<0.001) and the mean psychological well-being score (76.01±7.07) in the experimental group increased (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The present study showed that compassion-focused therapy is effective on rumination and psychological well-being of depressed patients. Therefore, it is suggested to use this approach to reduce rumination and improve psychological well-being.
