Background and Objectives: Addiction to social media is a topic of modern times, in which the concept of needs is of particular importance. The current research aimed to determine the relationship between satisfaction of basic needs and addiction to social networks, considering the mediating role of the need for social feedback in Instagram social network users.
Materials and Methods: In the current descriptive-correlational study, the statistical population consisted of university students in Tabriz in academic year of 2023-2024. Based on Cohen (1988) formula, 397 participants were selected using multi-stage random cluster sampling. The data collection tools included the Social Feedback Needs in Social Media Scale (Duradoni et al., 2023), the Mobile-Based Social Media Addiction Scale (Khaje ahmadi et al., 2016), and the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale (Gagné, 2003). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test and structural equation modeling (SEM).
Results: The results indicated a significant correlation between the research variables (p<0.01). Satisfaction of basic psychological needs directly explained 48% (β=-0.48, p=0.001) and indirectly 32% (β=-0.32) of the variance in social media addiction. According to the results of the bootstrap test and the amount of variance accounted for (VAF), the need for social feedback in social networks had a partial mediating role.
Conclusion: Instagram users who have unsatisfied basic needs (competence, self-following, and belonging) and as a result need social feedback in social networks, are more at risk of addiction to social networks. The study results emphasize educating users about psychological needs and healthy ways to respond to them, fostering real-life connections, and managing time spent on social media.
