Background and Objectives: Maladaptive perfectionism, as a personality trait, may interact with psychological mechanisms such as obsessive–compulsive symptoms and subsequently influence the quality of interpersonal relationships. The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of obsessive–compulsive symptoms in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and interpersonal problems among adolescents.
Materials and Methods: This study employed a descriptive–correlational design using structural equation modeling (SEM). The statistical population comprised all male senior high school students in Mashhad City during the 2022–2023 academic year, aged between 15 and 18 years. A total of 597 students were selected through multistage cluster random sampling. The research instruments included the Perfectionism Questionnaire developed by Hill et al. (2004), the Children’s Yale–Brown Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) by Foa et al. (2010), and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems – Short Form (IIP-32), based on the Barkham et al. (1996) version. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and structural equation modeling
Results: Findings indicated that maladaptive perfectionism had a significant positive effect on interpersonal problems (β=0.33, p<0.001). Obsessive–compulsive symptoms also significantly predicted interpersonal problems (β=0.68, p<0.001). Furthermore, a significant positive relationship was observed between maladaptive perfectionism and obsessive–compulsive symptoms (β=0.41, p<0.001). The results also demonstrated that maladaptive perfectionism indirectly influenced interpersonal problems through obsessive–compulsive symptoms (β=0.28, p<0.001).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that maladaptive perfectionism may contribute to interpersonal problems in adolescents by increasing obsessive–compulsive symptoms. These results can inform the design of psychological interventions aimed at improving social relationships among adolescents exhibiting maladaptive perfectionism and obsessive–compulsive traits
