Abstract:   (30 Views)
Background and Objectives: Suicide is a complex phenomenon in public health that is influenced by various factors. This study was conducted with the aim of examining the geographical distribution of suicide and suicide attempts in Hormozgan Province in Iran during 2019 to 2023.
Materials and Methods: This ecological study was conducted using data on suicide and suicide attempte registered at the Health Deputy of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences from 2019 to 2023. During this period, 541 suicides and 9522 attempted suicides registered in the province were extracted from the system. Rates of suicide and suicide attempts were calculated by county and their geographical distribution was examined. These rates were categorized into 5 categories and shown on the map with a color spectrum from green to red.
Results: In 2019 and 2020, the majority of counties were in the categories with low suicide rates, and only Hajjiabad and Minab were in the higher category, shown in red, in 2020. From 2021 to 2022, the distribution of suicide increased, and several counties, including Rudan, Abu Musa, Bandar Khamir, and Hajjiabad, moved to categories with higher suicide rates. In 2023, the overall trend of suicide became decreasing and stable, and no county was placed in the red category. The trend of suicide attempts was also similar to that of suicide and since 2021, an increase in suicide attempts was observed in the counties of Hajjiabad, Rudan, Bandar Khamir, Qeshm, and Bandar Abbas.
Conclusion: This study clarified the important role of geographical factors in shaping the rates of suicide. Identifying high-risk areas and developing locally adapted, evidence-based policies can be a crucial step in reducing the rates of this phenomenon.
