Considering the rapid pace of scientific article production in the present era and the limitations of traditional indicators to measure the social impacts of articles, the necessity of familiarity with and use of new indicators is evident. The present continuing education study was conducted to provide an introduction to altmetrics, demonstrating the role of these indicators in examining the impact of science among the media, the general public, and policymakers. This article describes altmetrics, the calculation of the Altmetric Attention Score, the interpretation of the colors in the Altmetric donut, methods for viewing and analyzing the score, and the key factors that influence the Altmetric Attention Score. This study also highlights the importance of knowledge translation in the current era for the accurate evaluation of articles alongside altmetrics. Knowledge translation not only helps researchers increase the visibility and international credibility of their articles but also, through responsible simplification of specialized concepts, prevents media misconceptions and the promotion of pseudoscience in social media. Finally, this study introduces altmetrics as a vital indicator used to evaluate the connection between academic research and the utilization of its results.
