Background and Objectives: Diabetes is a widespread chronic disease worldwide that not only affects physical health but also impacts various psychological aspects of patients. This review study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) on insomnia, self-care, and psychological well-being in patients with diabetes.
Materials and Methods: Through a systematic review, all selected articles based on specialized keywords were evaluated from foreign databases between August 2010 and February 2024. A total of 917 English articles were reviewed, and after assessing quality using the PRISMA model, 22 selected articles were further analyzed.
Results: The results indicated that CBT was effective in improving various aspects of diabetes, including blood sugar control, self-care behaviors, reducing depression and anxiety, and enhancing psychological well-being. Digital and group interventions, especially in managing insomnia and reducing stress, had positive effects. These approaches were beneficial for individuals with diabetes and comorbid conditions such as chronic pain or sleep problems in improving quality of life and mental health and achieving metabolic goals. Furthermore, training coaches and providing interventions in underserved areas were proposed as effective strategies.
Conclusion: Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps in improving both the psychological and physical aspects of diabetes, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and enhancing self-care behaviors. This therapy can contribute to achieving metabolic goals and improving the quality of life for patients.
