Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder that disrupts a person's thinking, emotion, and behavior and reduces the quality of life. Therefore, early identification and therapeutic intervention are essential to reduce and improve the functioning of these patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of computer-based cognitive rehabilitation on reducing positive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. Thirty patients with schizophrenia hospitalized in the Psychiatric Center of the University of Ardabil in 2024-2025 were purposively selected and randomly assigned to two groups of 15: experimental and control. The experimental group received 12 sessions of 45-minute computer-based cognitive rehabilitation, and the control group was on the waiting list. Data (severity of patients' symptoms before and after the intervention) were collected using the Positive and Negative Schizophrenia Symptom Scale (Kay et al., 1987) and analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results showed that computer-based cognitive rehabilitation had a significant effect on positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia (F=68.40, p<0.001, η2=0.45) in men with schizophrenia. The effect size (0.45) indicates that this intervention explained about 45% of the changes in symptoms and has high explanatory power.
Conclusion: The present study showed that computer-based cognitive rehabilitation reduces positive symptoms and especially negative symptoms of schizophrenia by strengthening cognitive processes and executive functions. This method improves the daily functioning of patients. Therefore, its use is recommended as a complementary treatment alongside drug therapy.
